இன்றைய வாஷிங்டன் போஸ்ட் நாளிதழிலிருந்து சில சுவாரசியமான கட்டுரைகள்:

1. ஈராக், ஈராக், ஈராக்: ஈராக் படையெடுப்பின் மூன்றாவது ஆண்டு நிறைவை அனுசரிக்கும் விதமாக, பல கருத்துப் பத்திகள்/கட்டுரைகள்/சித்திரங்கள்.
   
   
   
   
   • பாக்தாதில் வாழும் ஒரு வலைப்பதிவாளரின் வாழ்வில் ஒரு வாரம், அவரது சொந்த வார்த்தைகளில். மிகவும் சுவாரசியமான கட்டுரை - பொய்களுக்கும் வதந்திகளுக்கும் அப்பாலிருந்து வரும் ஒரு நிஜக் குரல். அரசியல், ஆட்சியமைப்பு, நாட்டின் எதிர்காலம் என்பன பற்றியெல்லாம் ஹேஷ்யங்களின்றி, இன்றைய வாழ்வின் யதார்த்தங்களை முன் வைக்கிறது:
     
     "Just as I set foot in my room, an intense barrage of gunfire erupted on our street. Not good. My cell phone was ringing; it was a friend who lives down our street. "It's an American patrol," he al most whispered. "I can see Humvees from where I am. And it looks like they have Iraqi police with them.""
     
     "We were engrossed in morning preparations at work when a colleague called our attention to the latest "episode" of Saddam's trial -- a form of cheap entertainment for many Iraqis against the backdrop of dreary events in Baghdad. At least it's the one thing that Iraqis of all backgrounds agree upon."
     
     "In addition to regular and fixed holidays, it is possible to make up your own without the need to take leave. Better still, you can do it from the comfort of your bed, citing an unexpected security incident as an excuse.
     Like sometimes I don't feel like going to work. I just oversleep. The phone rings and wakes me up at 11 am.
     "Where are you, Dr.?" my boss inquires. "We were expecting you. You know the Directorate might send someone for inspection today."
     
     "Oh, I apologize, Dr.," I reply, trying to sound as wakeful as I can. "I'm on the Canal highway, and there seems to be an American roadblock. I'm not sure I'm going to make it to the clinic today."
     "I see. Let me know if you can -- Bye."
     And it's back under the sheets for me."

   • போர்: நம்பிக்கை: மூன்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு பாக்தாதில் அமெரிக்கப்படைகள் குவிந்து கொண்டிருந்த போது, ஈராக்கின் செய்தித்துறை அமைச்சர் "அமெரிக்கப் படைகளா? பாக்தாதிலா? சுத்த ஹம்பக்!" என்ற அளவில் காமெடியாகப் பேட்டி கொடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அந்தக் காமெடிக்கு ஈடாக, அமெரிக்க ராணுவ அமைச்சர் டானல்ட் ரம்ஸ்ஃபீல்டு கடந்த மூன்று ஆண்டுகளின் சாதனைகள் என்று ஒரு பட்டியலை முன்வைக்கிறார்.
     
     "Fortunately, history is not made up of daily headlines, blogs on Web sites or the latest sensational attack. History is a bigger picture, and it takes some time and perspective to measure accurately."
     
     
   • போர்: அவநம்பிக்கை: வலதுசாரி அறிவுஜீவியாக அறியப்படும் ஜார்ஜ் வில், இதற்கு மாறான பார்வையை முன்வைக்கிறார். பலமற்ற ஈராக்கிய அரசாங்கத்தின் செயலின்மையால் மக்கள் தேசிய நீரோட்டத்திலிருந்து விலகி மதச்சார்புடைய குழு அடையாளங்களில் தஞ்சம் புகுகின்றனர் என்ற வாதத்தை முன்வைக்கிறார். முடிவில்:
     
     "Conditions in Iraq have worsened in the 94 days that have passed since Iraq's elections in December. And there still is no Iraqi government that can govern. By many measures conditions are worse than they were a year ago, when they were worse than they had been the year before. Three years ago the administration had a theory: Democratic institutions do not just spring from a hospitable culture, they can also create such a culture. That theory has been a casualty of the war that began three years ago today."
     
   
   
2. ஐரோப்பாவும் இஸ்லாமும்: ஒரு அனுபவக் கட்டுரை: ஒரு இஸ்லாமிய இளைஞனை மணந்து மதம் மாறிய டச்சுப் பெண்மணியின் வாழ்க்கை எவ்வாறு மாறியுள்ளது என்பது பற்றியும், டச்சு நாட்டில் இஸ்லாமிற்கு எதிரான உணர்வுகள் தீவிரமடைந்து வருவது பற்றியும் இக்கட்டுரை பேசுகிறது. தெருக்களில் பர்தா அணிவதையும், டச்சு மொழி தவிர மற்ற மொழிகளைப் பேசுவதையும் தடை செய்யும் சட்டங்கள் இயற்றப்பட இருக்கின்றனவாம். மேலும் சில விஷயங்கள் காமெடியாக இருக்கின்றன:
   
   "Immigrants must learn some Dutch, pass a history and geography test and, to get a feel for whether they can live in this society, watch a film on Dutch culture that includes two gay men kissing and a topless woman walking on a beach."

3. இந்தியாவின் ஆயுர்வேத மையங்கள்: ஒரு பயணக் கட்டுரை: உடலையும் மனதையும் புனரமைப்பு செய்யும் ஆயுர்வேத சிகிச்சை மையங்களுக்குச் சென்று வந்த ஒரு அமெரிக்கரின் பயணக் கட்டுரை. தமிழ்நாட்டில் ஒரு மையத்திலும், வடக்கே கங்கைக் கரையில் ஒரு மையத்திலும் இருந்து சிகிச்சை பெற்றிருக்கிறார். ஒரு மாதம் லீவு போட்டு விட்டு...
