Locking the barn door after letting the horse out?

“Scientists this week discovered that the Earth is currently at its hottest in the past 2000 years....what this means is the last time when somebody said, ”Jesus! it’s hot!“, they were, indeed, actually TALKING TO JESUS!”

- Jay Leno, The Late Night Show, Friday

In late January 2003, as Secretary of State Colin Powell prepared to argue the Bush administration's case against Iraq at the United Nations, veteran CIA officer Tyler Drumheller sat down with a classified draft of Powell's speech to look for errors. He found a whopper: a claim about mobile biological labs built by Iraq for germ warfare.

Drumheller instantly recognized the source, an Iraqi defector suspected of being mentally unstable and a liar. The CIA officer took his pen, he recounted in an interview, and crossed out the whole paragraph.

A few days later, the lines were back in the speech. Powell stood before the U.N. Security Council on Feb. 5 and said: "We have first-hand descriptions of biological weapons factories on wheels and on rails."

The official spokesman of the Army of Martyrs of the International Islamic Movement struggled to summon a militant mien. At the time, in early 2004, U.S. troops were fighting in the Iraqi city of Najaf, and the leaders of the Shiite theocracy in Iran felt compelled to rattle a saber in the name of protecting Shiite Islam's holiest city. The group claimed to be signing up volunteer suicide bombers by the thousands. But as the discussion progressed, the spokesman acknowledged that the effort was essentially public relations, and that he, for one, was not about to blow himself up.

They call themselves ‘rudeboys’, these Sikh and Hindu wannabe-hoodlums from the not-so-mean streets of West London. Or at least that’s how Jas, our narrator and guide, refers to the gang who have recently befriended him. But naming is a tricky business within the quicksilver world of urban youth culture. As Jas explains, “First we was rudeboys, then we be Indian niggas, then rajamuffins, then raggastanis, Britasians, ...Indobrits. these days we try an use our own word for homeboy an so we just call ourselves desis”

Carter is one of hundreds of highly qualified non-governmental, non-industry, non-lobby group climate experts who contest the hypothesis that human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are causing significant global climate change. "Climate experts" is the operative term here. Why? Because what Gore's "majority of scientists" think is immaterial when only a very small fraction of them actually work in the climate field.
Even among that fraction, many focus their studies on the impacts of climate change; biologists, for example, who study everything from insects to polar bears to poison ivy. "While many are highly skilled researchers, they generally do not have special knowledge about the causes of global climate change," explains former University of Winnipeg climatology professor Dr. Tim Ball. "They usually can tell us only about the effects of changes in the local environment where they conduct their studies."

The notion that there's no gain from reducing carbon emissions - even in the unlikely event that there turns out to be no effect on long-term global temperatures - is patently absurd. Offhand I can name benefits: improved air quality with attendant lower of non-carbon aerosols like mercury and uranium (which would lead to lower incidence of many diseases), less acidification of lakes and other bodies of water, reduction of ecosystem damage in bodies of water like the Gulf of Mexico (large stretches of which are now hypoxic to anoxic), an extraordinary leap in energy efficiency as a generation of industrial machines are upgraded to modern versions, and finally a reduction in global economic instability as energy sources are made more distributed.

NEARLY FIVE years into a war between the United States and Islamic extremists, U.S. policies and practices for arresting, holding, interrogating and trying enemy militants are in a state of disarray unprecedented in modern American history. They shame the nation and violate its fundamental values.
    ...
Guantanamo Bay has become a toxic symbol around the world of U.S. human rights violations, a status magnified by recent suicides. No detainees have been transferred there in 21 months, and President Bush has said he would like to close the facility. But the Pentagon is spending millions to build a state-of-the-art penitentiary at the base.

அவர் ‘ஈரான்' என்று சொல்லி விட்டு, உடனேயே ‘but I am a Zoroastrian’ என்றார்.

In Yazd, a pleasant, desert city in the dead center of Iran, Zoroastrians enjoy a vivid reputation for honesty. Prices in a shop owned by a Zoroastrian are regarded as the benchmark that competing shops are compared against. Children are told that when arriving in a strange town near dark, seek out a Zoroastrian home to spend the night in.
"I'm sorry to say it and it might sound offensive, but these Zoroastrians are better Muslims than we are," said Mohammad Pardehbaff, a Yazd driver.
    ...
Yet Zoroastrians are leaving Iran as well; perhaps 10,000 remain. In Taft, 10 miles south of Yazd, only the elderly linger in the mud-walled warren of houses identifiable as Zoroastrian by the tiny oil lamps burning in glass cases fitted into walls. "It's like we have leprosy, the way they've evacuated!" said Ardeshir Rostami, 83.

    If you'd read my note
You would know the answers to
    These stupid questions.

    Windowless office.
    Some days it would be
    Nice to see the rain.

Great literature it ain't. But it's not bad as poetry for Dilbert-san.

At one point, drawing on his own experiences, Joffe reduces European debates about the United States to a single composite conversation: a long, hilarious exchange between a pro-American X and an anti-American Y. An excerpt:
"Y: Just look at [American] TV.
"X: And we [Europeans] don't have reality TV, soaps, and afternoon talk shows that deal with sexual perversions?
"Y: These are all American imports, which they are inflicting on us.
"X: Who Wants To Be a Millionaire is a British and Big Brother a Dutch invention.
"Y: (escaping into circularity): This just goes to show how much American vulgarity has seeped into European sensibilities.
"X: What about the inundation of European TV with hard-core porn movies and telephone-sex ads, which are strictly homemade.
"Y: (shifting ground again): Americans are too Puritan to confront sex honestly."

Sankar,

Thanks for the link. I agree overwhelmingly with your ideas, and I especially agree with the three action items you have put forth - great ideas.

However, I completely disagree with your philosophical position presented in the last paragraph. It is a false choice to say that there are only two ideological extremes to choose from. I, for one, refuse to be arm-twisted or have my philosophical hand forced by the extreme positionings of those whose voices happen to be the loudest in a debate.

thanks,

Srikanth

>However, I completely disagree with your philosophical position presented in >the last paragraph.

I exactly knew this when I was sending it to you :-)

I dont know whether I can quickly communicate why I think so. Let me try otherwise we will argue next time when we meet :-)

What I wrote is a blanket statement - it does not apply for all the cases of two-opposite-extremist-ideologies, but it applies wherever there are people who have felt/still-bearing the brunt of physical violence. two examples are eezham issue and caste issue. Of course, there is middle ground and I too like it as a solution. But the people who talk about this middle ground is not only minority but is completely incapable of action. How long we can wait for them to become majority or do-instead-of-talk when the people have been still suffering. It is easy to suggest peace and have a prolonged discussion on peace for decades but if I were in the original victim's place, I would know only my pain. When I dont see even a small change in the minds of the original perpetrators of violence, I will have to stand by the original victim. This is what I say in my statement.

If you ask for an instance where I would not like to go by the extreme stand - language issue. Even though this causes disadvantages for some and advantages for others, it is not a serious problem - people are not subjected to mental or physical violence.

Actually you make good points, and I see where you are coming from. I still don't agree with your conclusion if only because accepting it would means accepting unpalatable compromises. However, I have over the years grown to be slightly nuanced in my position in this manner - whereas *I* will not change my position in these situations (and embrace an extreme), if an *affected person* does so, I will understand their acceptance. This "understanding" (as patronizing as it sounds even though I don't mean it in that way) is different from either accepting it as right or advocating it as good.

To put it simplistically, if an eelam tamil or a caste-oppressed individual resorts to violence as a retort to their oppression, I will not criticize/condemn them for it. But if another person (not one among them) suggests that that is what they *should* be doing, I will criticize that person. In my mind, it is the moral/civic duty of the people that are not affected by a situation to see the bigger/long-term picture and not be as emotionally driven as those who are affected.

thanks,

Srikanth

I agree with you if you include the converse also:

"But if another person (not one among them) suggests that they *should not* be doing what they are doing and that they should stop it at any cost, I will criticize that person."

I agree.

In the back of my mind, however, I get the feeling that there is a more fundamental philosophical difference that we are not being explicit about (both of us), but I am not able to place a finger on it. I guess it will come out on its own at some point. :-)

thanks for the dialogue,

Srikanth

You are absolutely right. However, honestly I feel that we both have moved from our positions compared to 10 years back and we are still moving. But the problem is that we have much less time to discuss what we agree.

When I look at the big division in the blog-world and seeing its ugliness, I feel that there is no reason to feel so personally hurting each other. We can express our stand even if it is diametrically opposite and still be friends. That way, we will be able to understand the reason for our stands. That would be the first step to come to a middle ground.

Amen to that.

மூன்று தலையங்கங்களின் தலைப்புகள் கூட சொல்லி வைத்தாற்போல ஒரே மாதிரி இருந்தன - Death of a Terrorist (NYTimes), Death of a Fanatic (Guardian), Death of a warlord (Hindu).

You broke it, you fix it

Staff Sgt. Frank D. Wuterich, 26, told his attorney that several civilians were killed Nov. 19 when his squad went after insurgents who were firing at them from inside a house. The Marine said there was no vengeful massacre, but he described a house-to-house hunt that went tragically awry in the middle of a chaotic battlefield.
    ...
Puckett said that while Wuterich was evaluating the scene, Marines noticed a white, unmarked car full of "military-aged men" lingering near the bomb site. When Marines ordered the men to stop, they ran; Puckett said it was standard procedure at the time for the Marines to shoot suspicious people fleeing a bombing, and the Marines opened fire, killing four or five men.

Military officials were not releasing the names of the detainees yesterday, but said two were Saudi Arabian nationals and one was a Yemeni national. Harris described them as having close ties to terrorist organizations in the Middle East and said their suicides were "not an act of desperation, but an act of asymmetric warfare against us."
    ...
"This is a determined, intelligent, committed element," Craddock said. "They continue to do everything they can . . . to become martyrs."

Moulitsas, founder of the Daily Kos, is one of the most influential progressive bloggers in America today and a symbol of an expanding Internet-based movement that has led the attacks on President Bush while challenging the Democratic establishment.
Moulitsas's message is clear and uncompromising. "The media elite has failed us," he says. "The political elite has failed us. Both parties. Republicans failed us because they can't govern. Democrats failed us because they can't get elected."
Many Democrats see this emerging community as a source of innovation, energy and ideas that will change the way politics and journalism are practiced, and one that will provide a new army of activists for a party badly in need of help.

Brighten your rainy day with this 10-panel umbrella that lets light shine through to stunning effect. The stained-glass design is a reproduction of the cathedral's 25-foot-wide Creation Rose window, which was designed with more than 10,500 pieces of handblown glass.

Music to my ears, but...

Q: Why do most people hate the sound of their voice when they hear it on a recording device?
—Victoria W., Wellington, Fla.

A: We hear our own voices primarily through bone conduction, but others hear them only through air conduction. So our voices sound lower in pitch and more resonant to us. In short: We hear our voices through a flattering filter.

For what it’s worth:

Let’s put the creamy layer argument also in perspective now. Point is that such elite education which has so many barriers – expensive and time consuming coaching, expensive education, elite culture, etc. is under the present order going to be a preserve only of a select few. All we are saying is whether it is going to be the preserve of a few higher castes or some of the other castes can also find an entry. Even if it is backward IAS’s daughter, so be it, finally many others are also IAS’s wards, so how does it make a difference? As has been rightly said by the critiques, it’s a populist measure for the votes. etc. But so is every single policy of the govt. and so it will be in a ‘vote bank democracy’ – either for the votes directly, or for generating resources for the next election. When an Ambani or an Enron is granted abominable concessions, why don’t we come on streets and say, “it is for money for the next elections.”

“Rahul Mahajan, son of the murdered Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan, was hospitalised in a critical condition on Friday after snorting cocaine. Pramod Mahajan's personal secretary Bibek Moitra, who also took cocaine, died.”

“Rahul Mahajan was hospitalised in a critical condition and Pramod Mahajan's personal secretary Bibek Moitra died under mysterious circumstances early on Friday.”

Now at last, Mr. Chavez is the object of a growing backlash from leaders around Latin America -- from Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Mexico and Nicaragua, among other countries. In part, the politicians are responding to foolish overreaching by Mr. Chavez, who has been busy trying to turn Bolivia into a satellite state while suggesting he has similar plans for much of the rest of the continent. Latin Americans don't like imperialism, whether it comes from Washington or Caracas. And even leftist leaders, like those who rule in Brazil and elsewhere in South America, find it hard to imagine themselves prospering in a Venezuela-led economic bloc that includes Cuba but shuns the United States.

Cheney still has strong allies in the administration, particularly Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. But the Pentagon is increasingly seen as the source of problems rather than solutions for this administration as Iraq goes from bad to worse, with the military, financial and moral costs of the American effort mounting toward unbearable levels.
    ...
Bush is more open to a diplomatic outcome for the Iranian crisis than he was on Iraq. He knows he can muster no significant international support for intervention in Iran. But the Iranians have the capacity to bring about the return of Dick Cheney to policy dominance if they continue to overplay their hand.

Nearly all were aiming for Italy and mainland Europe. But when their skiffs foundered or ran out of gas, they found themselves in a nation of just 400,000 people, more densely populated than Bangladesh, where families have known each other for generations and people from the next village are considered outsiders.
"There is a feeling of 'My God, we are being invaded!' " said Katrine Camilleri, a lawyer with the Jesuit Refugee Service, which aids the boat people. "It's becoming more and more acceptable for people to openly say, 'We don't want them.' "
    ...
We don't want a multicultural society," said Martin Degiorgio, a leader of the Republican National Alliance, an anti-immigrant group formed last year. "Haven't you seen the problems it has brought to France and Britain?"

மற்றவை all is fair in love, war and football என்ற ரகத்தில் உள்ளன.

Q: Okay, we don't want to provoke an international incident, but what team would you least like to see win the World Cup?
Argentina: Oh, I can't answer that. It is not a question for a diplomat.
Brazil: Argentina, for sure. I'm sure if you ask an Argentinian, they will say Brazil. Our countries are good friends which is probably why the rivalry is so strong.
