Superman Returns is splashed with enough Christian imagery for a cathedral full of stained-glass windows.

The movie's director is Jewish. So were the two teenagers who created the Superman character - based in part on Jewish sacred stories and legends - in 1932. Nonetheless, obvious images from iconic Christian art and stories are as common in this film as product placements are in most summer blockbusters:

Superman, having been sent by his father, saves the world while (almost) sacrificing his own life. The villain, Lex Luthor, stabs him in the side. While he is being brutally beaten, the only sympathetic face belongs to a "fallen woman."

Director Bryan Singer has said he sees Jewish and Christian roots in Superman.

"So it's sort of the American dream combined with a little bit of the myth, the concept of Messiah. He's the Jesus Christ of superheroes," he told the magazine Wizard last year.

Among the most militant among the developing country ministers was India's Nath. He infuriated U.S. and other officials by announcing on Friday, just as the conference was beginning, that he was strongly considering leaving early because of the lack of promise for a breakthrough. And, according to participants at one Friday night meeting, Nath showed up very late because, he said, he wanted to catch the World Cup soccer match between Argentina and Germany -- although the representatives of Argentina had come to the meeting on time.

Nath and other ministers from developing nations were particularly critical of the United States for refusing to break the stalemate by going further in reducing subsidies. The hard-line U.S. position helped take some of the pressure off of European Union negotiators, who have been vilified at past WTO meetings as the biggest coddlers of rich farmers.

At a minimum, Congress should force the administration to publish the guidance it gives to personnel in the field concerning the article's meaning. More broadly, it should consider legislation putting meat on the treaty's rather bare bones. It should consider every exceptional practice the administration has tried to justify: from "waterboarding" and other practices of torture and near-torture to "renditions" of suspects to foreign governments to the holding of prisoners incommunicado. One obvious place to start would be to stipulate that the CIA's network of secret prisons is not consistent with Geneva's requirements: Its detainees must be transferred to U.S. facilities, registered with the International Red Cross and guaranteed humane treatment.

I was looking for something that feels a little more real, like what I had found more than 20 years back. I was an American kid of 6 when I first set foot in a Rajasthani village where my father was born and raised. After the initial culture shock -- no electricity or running water, for starters -- I glimpsed a world of color, anchored in old ways. Admittedly, I've looked back since then with misty eyes -- something my next trip to the village, in 2004, didn't cure me of. After all I'd heard about the flight of Indians (including some of my cousins) to cities, I expected a scene straight out of a Feed the Children ad. Instead, green fields of wheat and mustard swayed in the breeze. Schoolchildren treated me to dance and song. Women in red saris with gold and silver trim grabbed my hand and led me into their homes for a cup of chai.

----My stomach was starting to turn, so the man gave me a drink of rose water and cane sugar. It didn't help. Later, along a bumpy, winding road, I asked the driver to stop the car, then stumbled across a field looking for the nearest bush.----

Good piece. and motivates me to write my similar encounter on a bus ride from Jhalawar to Jaipur.

Many thanks for this post & pointer.

//குவாண்டானமோ சட்டங்கள்: //
